Diving back into website wrangling

Phil is cooking bacon. I’m trying to come alive, the tea is helping. I was up far later than I would have liked last night, fighting with the new web site.

I’ve got a new wallpaper posted as a patron appreciation gift, that is, a “thank you” for all the people who have donated to the Girl Genius web site this month. I used to do one every month, but in the last year or so I’ve been really tired, and things have slipped a bit. A lot. I’m trying to get a handle on it all again.

Since the web site was redesigned (by someone else), I’ve been having a lot of trouble with it. It’s basically a case of “She’s tidied up and I can’t find anything.” It’s also a problem that I only ever worked in html with a couple of php includes and javascripts. Now it’s got CSS smeared all over it, and all my files have been moved around. A lot. And all my old files were left in place, so it’s kind of a jungle. This is why you shouldn’t let other people take over your stuff…especially brilliant people who know more about it than you do. It would be fine if I didn’t need to be the one to change things on a moment’s notice, or if I had a live-in web assistant, but I don’t. And I really need to be able to make these changes myself, I don’t want to be relying on someone else for every little tweak. Ugh. So I have to make time for the learning curve, which I haven’t managed so far.

On the other hand, that bookmark feature is really nice! I don’t want to break it, or anything else, as I figure things out, so I’m making a shadow web site…basically a copy on another server that I can bang away at without hurting what you folks see. It will be…fun? and educational. Yes. Educational.
